Our Youth squad returned to our training circuit for the last night of the series that has been brilliantly organised by Team Darenth. With the points for the past rounds all tied up the riders had the chance to take extra kudos in the Night of Champions.
Luke Mitchie did not race on the night but took 4th in series overall in the u16. Toby Martin finished 3rd on the night and 5th overall. Josie Kelly came home in 2nd place reflecting her overall series position. Matilda Collins crossed the line in 6th and 6th place overall in the girls u16. VTTA 10tt (q10/30)
Nick Malins put in his best performance in a 10t ever with a PB of 20.14. This gave Nick a 3rd place finish overall and he was incredibly pleased with his result! Great work again from the clubs top time trialist
SERRL Benenden / Sandhurst (2/3/4/w/j)
With over 60 riders on the start sheet the race was looking good. With more riders arriving the weather decided to have a change of heart, no summer haze here. The heavens opened and was miserable, so the field dwindled to just over 40 at the start behind the SERRL convoy.
Within 2 laps the field had split. Conditions were slippery and riders vision was obscured by the downpour making the decent dangerous. This had turned into a race for the best bike handlers....or the brave! Riders peeled off to head back to hq and with 3 laps to go the race was down to a lead group of under 20 riders, with a small chasing party of 6 way behind. Malcolm Davies has never finished lower than 4th on this course and the weather was not going to ruin his record!
With the final lap bell sounding Malcs group had dwindled to 4 as they had kicked and got away, taking advantage of the halt in rain. Looking down the long uphill to the finish Malc appeared and started his sprint side by side with a rider from VC Meudon. Malc kicked and as the other rider put his pedal down to follow suit his bike slipped on the wet, possibly a grate, and he took a nasty hit to the tarmac. Malc rode onto the finish taking the win, very much deserved after a brave ride in horrible conditions. Malc summed it up back at HQ, "That was horrible, i was cornering like a granny!" Brilliant ride and Malc keeps his record in tact!!
